Community Education

Workshops and Seminars have been a high priority of the Aotea Family Support Group since its inception and this has not changed over the past 21 years. Our commitment to Child, Youth and Family as approved providers of their services mean we endeavour to deliver several family orientated workshops a year and suggestions from residents often leads to several more workshops of interest and benefit to the wider community.  The Aotea Family Support Group also contributes to workshops organised by other people by way of contributions to airfares. 

Examples of workshops held over the years include;

Cross Cultural Communication, Well Women, Treaty of Waitangi, Assertiveness, The Joy of Teenagers, Tough Love, Toolbox Parenting Courses, Is your glass half empty or half full?, Writers workshop, Skippers Ticket, Risk Management, Small Business Management, Self Defence for women, Self Defence for teenagers, Drumming, Alternative Power Systems, Christmas present making, Ngapuhi Housing, Defensive Driving,  Maori  language classes, Listening and Communication, Anger Management for Men and many, many more….


Umbrella Groups

The Aotea Family Support Group is pleased to have acted as the umbrella for many groups over the years, these have included, Dance Group, Project Jonah, Correspondence Club, Education Trust, Bushmen and Poets, Yoga Training, Bits and Pieces, Arts and Crafts, Yoga Creche, Tryphena Hall Committee, Eco-Fest, Soccer Group, Pensioner Housing, Music Group, Aotea Art. 

Youth Opportunity Grant

This biennial (2 yearly) Grant has been established to celebrate 21 years of service by the Aotea Family Support Group Charitable Trust (AFSG)

Criteria:

1.  This grant is for an island youth who wants to gain an experience, whether it be of a recreational, educational, cultural, sporting or career orientated nature.

2.  An island youth is defined as aged from 13-18 yrs inclusive, to whom Great Barrier Island is home.

3.  Applications are to be made in writing to the AFSG, and must be received by July every 2nd Year. 

4.  Applicants will be short listed and interviewed with the announcement being made in September of that year.

5.  The funds available to the recipient will vary according to the needs of the activity, to a maximum of $3000.

6.  The grant is to be funded from the AFSG Trust’s own resources and aided by donations from the Community.

The 1st years Grant is funded by the kind donations of Stan McGeady and a team of visitors.

 

The services of the Support Group are made possible through government assistance and grants from the
ASB Community Trust, the Lottery Grants Board, Auckland Council, the Community Organisations Grants Scheme, and United Way.
