   AOTEA FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP -
Home Help Scheme and Over 60's Dinners

Home Help Scheme

The Home Help scheme started in 1994 and is a contract with Aotea Health. People are assessed by Aotea Health and the Aotea Family Support Group finds the worker for the client and manages the service.  At present there are 16 workers who go into the home to do everything from washing floors, general housework to laundry and shopping.  Personal care is also available where required.  This service enables people to remain in their own homes and stay on the island for as long as possible.  It gives isolated elderly people contact with other people in the community and it provides employment for the community.

Over 60’s Dinners

Once a month people who are 60 years and over gather to share a 2 course meal subsidised by the Aotea Family Support Group.  The meals alternate between different clubs, but are usually at the Great Barrier Island Sports & Social Club and Barrier Social Club.  Occasionally they are held at Great Barrier Lodge and Motairehe Marae and may be held at the Port FitzRoy Boating Club.  Buses are also subsidised to transport people to the meals.  Every December there is a Christmas luncheon and every June there is a Mid-Winter Christmas luncheon.

Anyone who is interested in being put on the invitation list can contact the office of the Aotea Family Support Group Phone: 09 4290465

The services of the Support Group are made possible through government assistance and grants from the
ASB Community Trust, the Lottery Grants Board, Auckland Council, the Community Organisations Grants Scheme, and United Way.
