Counselling Services

We have a range of counsellors for island residents to connect with. Because of our remote location, most are by phone or online, although we’re excited to offer, for the first time in several years, a face-to-face counsellor.

Nicki Foster visits the island every alternate Wednesday. You can read more about her here or contact her to book on 021 034 1011

Dione Davies is available online or by phone 18+ only. Experienced counsellor and art therapist, registered with ACC for sensitive claims. Best way to contact is email - dione@aftertherain.co.nz

Margie Matthews, also available online and by phone. Particular experience with whanau/ youth. Phone 021 496 620

Sam Grimshaw is an Aotea local who is currently on the mainland completing his Masters in Counselling. He works mostly with our rangatahi (12–25-year-olds) and their families. You can reach Sam on 021 02978608.

Youth Services

We have two youth programmes:

After-School Development Programme (ASDP)

For Years 7–8 (ages 11–12)

A structured, supportive space focused on whanaungatanga, social connection, emotional wellbeing, and developing life skills through engaging, supervised activities.

Kaiārahi Rangatahi / Youth Navigator Programme (KRP)

For rangatahi aged 13–21

Builds confidence, resilience, and leadership through small group sessions, mentoring, and community involvement. Rangatahi gain practical life skills and the tools to thrive. It’s about real-life experiences, a sense of belonging, and becoming active contributors to their communities. KRP helps lay strong foundations for their development and future pathways.

Both programmes offer structured, supervised social activities aimed at: whanaungatanga (building relationships); developing positive behaviours; improving mental well-being; developing confidence and leadership; learning teamwork and providing opportunities to contribute to the community.

KRP also involves individual mentoring and small group work.

This programme is for vulnerable adults who are unable to tackle small jobs around the house and lack the means to pay someone. Its focus is on improving safety around the home, e.g. building handrails on outside steps, putting down anti-slip matting, cleaning gutters; anything that will reduce the risk of a frail person having a fall or injuring themselves.

Every year we run two main fundraising events:

The New Year’s Picnic – January 2nd - a much-loved family day out that not only raises money for our crisis fund, but allows local growers and makers to showcase and sell their products.

Di-14.jpg

The legendary Manu Competition at the Port Fitzroy wharf every January, to raise funds for an off-island trip for our rangatahi.

We also periodically host community resilience trainings (such as parenting workshops), carwashes and bake sales.

All money raised goes back into our programmes and services.
